Introduced in 1961, the Patek Philippe Ref. 3440 is one of the more understated references within the Calatrava family. Produced for only a relatively short period, it combines the timeless proportions of the classic Calatrava with the practicality of Patek Philippe’s celebrated automatic movement.

 


Measuring 34mm in diameter, excluding crown. The solid 18ct yellow gold case features the distinctive stepped bezel and angular lugs unique to the reference. Rather than the bright yellow appearance seen on polished examples, the gold has mellowed beautifully over the decades, developing the rich warm honey-orange tone that is often admired by collectors of untouched vintage Patek Philippe watches.

 

The silver sunburst dial is exceptionally elegant, featuring applied gold baton markers with the signature triple index at 12 o’clock, a recessed small seconds register, and slender dauphine hands. Its clean, symmetrical layout perfectly reflects the restrained design language that defines the Calatrava collection.

 

Powering the watch is Patek Philippe’s renowned Calibre 27-460M, the manufacture’s first full-rotor automatic movement, featuring a Gyromax balance and an 18ct gold rotor. The watch is running perfectly and keeping excellent time.

 

The Ref. 3440 remains one of the more refined vintage Calatravas, combining outstanding movement architecture with timeless aesthetics. Examples displaying the beautiful mellow colouring of naturally aged yellow gold are becoming increasingly difficult to source.
